EDUCATION REVIEW REPORT – Community Page

4 November 2009

To the Parents and Community of Trentham School

These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s latest report on Trentham School.

Trentham School provides high quality education for students from new entrants to year 6.  Recent demographic changes mean that the school is becoming more multicultural.  At the time of this review in August 2009, of the 423 students enrolled, 26% identify as Maori and 10% are from Pacific backgrounds.

Self review is effectively used to inform decision making.  The supportive and enthusiastic Board of Trustees consulted widely when reviewing the vision and strategic plan.  Establishing expectations for a ‘Trentham Kid’ by the time they reach year six was an outcome of the consultation.  This, along with the vision statement, acknowledges the importance of fostering students’ holistic development through strengthening relationships and building resilience and respect for others.

The principal is a highly reflective practioner who works closely with other senior managers to provide effective leadership.  The board also supports many opportunities for staff to remain up to date with current knowledge and teaching practices.  High expectations for teaching and learning are clearly articulated in school documentation.  The systematic use of evidence-based self review to improve students’ learning and achievement is actively promoted.  Resources are allocated to meet identified student needs, interests and abilities

Staff work collegially and there is a strong culture of professional learning.  Teachers are well informed and reflective.  The school is making good progress towards giving effect to The New Zealand Curriculum in its planning, organisation and teaching.  Good quality assurance systems help to align practices with expectations for effective teaching to support improved student achievement.

An appropriate emphasis is given to the teaching of literacy and numeracy.  Planning is of high quality, based on teachers’ knowledge of students and analysis of assessment information.  Data show that most students are accomplishing or achieving above national expectations in reading, writing and mathematics.

A positive, nurturing culture permeates all aspects of school life.  Caring and respectful interactions and well understood routines support learning.  A clear focus on teaching values reinforces the vision statement.  There is a shared commitment by the board, management, teachers and support staff to meet the needs of all children.  Classroom environments are inclusive and well resourced.

Students are articulate, motivated and enjoy their learning.  They willingly contribute to classroom discussions and are confident in working both independently and cooperatively with others.  They report that they feel safe at school, speak positively about their teachers and acknowledge that their contributions are valued.  They are provided many opportunities to be in leadership roles and take an active part in school life.

Community partnership is encouraged.  The open-door policy and effective programmes, such as the “Sunflower Club” and “Discovery” help children and their families’ transition to school.   Formal and informal reporting and an easy to negotiate web page keep parents well-versed about school matters and the educational progress of their children.

Future Action

ERO is confident that the board of trustees can govern the school in the interest of the students and the Crown and bring about the improvements outlined in this report.  ERO is likely to carry out the next review in three years.

Review Coverage

ERO reviews do not cover every aspect of school performance and each ERO report may cover different issues.  The aim is to provide information on aspects that are central to student achievement and useful to this school.

If you would like a copy of the full report, please contact the school or see the ERO website, www.ero.govt.nz.
