Middle School Classroom Behaviour Management Plan
The intention is that teachers will establish strong rapport with students in the first instance, affirming and giving positive reinforcement for appropriate and good behaviour. Awards for appropriate behaviour will be given out at Syndicate assembly. Appropriate behaviours will be explicitly taught and modelled. If offending occurs, warning and explanation will be first steps toward redirection and correction.
Each teacher will display classroom rules. Students will discuss and take ownership of these rules, developing understanding of why this is necessary for co-operation and a healthy, functional, and safe learning environment. These will be revisited each term.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR PLAN
STEP 1
A class or school rule is broken.
Student will be reminded of the rule and name is written on the board.
STEP 2
A class or school rule is broken for the second time.
A mark is placed by the student’s name and other strategies used e.g. time out, a quick run to release energy, spoken to individually, sent off to think and reflect.
STEP 3 - Yellow card
A class or school rule is broken for the third time.
The child is sent to another room in the Middle Syndicate, accompanied by a buddy, for at least 45 minutes or as arranged by the classroom teacher.
The child takes a yellow card. Class/school rules will be copied out, or other work will be completed, and then student can return to class.
STEP 4 – red card
A class or school rule is broken for a fourth time.
The child is sent to the AP/DP accompanied by a buddy (Year 3 to DP, Year 4 to AP).
The child is on detention the following lunchtime run by classroom teacher. A standard detention slip is sent home to the parent /caregiver and is countersigned by AP/DP.
A copy of the detention slip is given to the AP/DP and classroom teacher.
At Step 4 a classroom detention equates to a consequence and needs to be documented.
Students will automatically go to Step 4 for blatant swearing, deliberate damage to property, and violence.
The time span for the steps is 1 week (Monday to Friday).
This plan covers class time, supervised morning tea and lunch breaks, and lining up after the bells.
The School-Wide Behaviour Plan will be activated after Step 4.
